The son of an immigrant sharecropper, Pedro spent his childhood in the strawberry fields of the Monterey Bay Area. He recollects those years in his online series Mexikid Stories. In 2023, he debuted Mexikid A Graphic Memoir, which garnered him the Newbery Honor Award, an Eisner Award, a Harvey Award as well as the Pura Belpré Author and Illustrator awards.
